Literature Text

           elusive and illiterate;
         how do I find you?
                   lost and undiscovered;
             where do I chart you?
   you'd say that you weren't just some number on a napkin
     but where else would I keep you
           when the summer roads led me from California to New York
                 searching for your face one more time?
     I kept old albums of your backyard parties,
          your birthday sleepovers
                        your ice cream soirees that went into the morning
               and you'd tell me to forget you,
                      just some page dust in a crumbling library
                    but you never remembered that
                             I'm the perfect library queen.

"It was a drawing of a barmaid
in blue ball point pen
on a cocktail napkin
and she said:
who's to say this isn't me...?"
