The egg yolk yellow overhang flapped lazily in the breeze that had made its way up from the beach, stirring the plants that lined the convenient store front just down the street. A slow blinking ‘OPEN’ sign hung in the window, and a pair of shaded blue eyes glanced at it hesitantly before pushing open the small door that led her inside.

It was quaint and bustling; the small room must have had about twenty or so people inside, all chatting or sipping coffee or munching on breakfast. A long row of vinyl tables sat in the middle of the room, with a few two seaters ringing the perimeter of the room. A couple groups sat near the back, towards the kitchen, where she could watch the cooks moving quickly about their tasks. She hung back in the ever so small waiting area until a cheerful waitress waved her over to a spot open – directly in the middle of the row of tables. Feeling slightly out of place, she glanced around her while thumbing over the menu.

To her right was a couple, presumably locals, who were too busy eating to have any sort of conversation. To her left, a large group of friends who took up most of the tables, were talking about some adventure they were going to have later that day. The table that was set against the wall in front of hers was held by an older man reading the paper and having a coffee. She had thought he was alone until another man walked in, around the same age, and they greeted each other enthusiastically before deciding on what to have for breakfast. Smiling slightly to herself, she watched the group in the back, a rather large family, try to eat their food while entertaining a little girl at the same time – she was clearly done with her plate and wanted to explore. Trying not to laugh, she gave her order to the waitress who had come back: scrambled eggs, toast, bacon, side of orange juice please. She had settled in a bit more, now that she could just wait for her food in peace. She glanced out the cafe window, watching a few people walk by, all headed somewhere important to them. It was a gorgeous day; not a cloud in the sky, and quite warm. The perfect day for a good wander.

The waitress came back with her order, and while she ate, she listened to the two older gentlemen talk about something one of them had read in the news the other day. The family in the back had finally eaten their fill and were cleaning up, paying the tab. She had to stop herself from laughing when the little girl cheered. The group of friends to her left were becoming more rowdy, but not obscenely so – she was glad she wasn’t the only morning person in there. As she finished her plate and waited for the bill, she glanced at the time and gave a small sigh, her face dropping slightly. We’ll see what happens, those words echoing in her head. She smiled wryly to herself – she should know better by now, honestly …

She paid and tipped the waitress, taking some pleasure at the woman’s wide eyes at the tip left behind for her. Leaning against the door, she rummaged in her bag for her sunglasses, engrossed in the task of not throwing anything onto the ground by accident. As she slid outside, she nearly walked into someone standing there, and as she turned to apologize, she stopped mid sentence. Her jaw first dropped, and then an unstoppable smile spread across her face, her heart fit to burst.

Wow I was wondering where you were going with this. That hook made me read it through to the end. Very thought-provoking. I love Observant characters.
